Does your aging parent have difficulty getting into and out of bed? Bed risers are simple effective items that will make it safer and easier. Seniors can (and do) get stuck in bed. Do not let this happen to your parents.

They raise the height of the bed. Some seniors sleep better with the head elevated so they only use risers on one end.
They are made of wood, metal or plastic, depending on the style.
They are designed for anyone with decreased strength, endurance, balance and sleeping problems where they need their head elevated (for example, obstructive sleep apnea). Seniors fit into this category. They are also a great way to reduce falls risk as they make it easier for your aging parent to get in and out of bed.
Height - They come in different heights. You want to mattress height to be high enough that it is easier for the user to get in and out, but not too high that they cannot touch the floor when sitting on the edge. A good starting point is having the mattress level with the crease of the users knee. You may need to compromise if people of differing heights sleep in the same bed.
Sturdy - Make sure they are sturdy enough for the weight of the bed and user. A wide supportive base is recommended.
They range from $10 to $80, depending on how many you need and their design.
Bed rail and transfer pole - Makes it easier to get in and out.
