Falls are a serious problem for seniors. It is very important to prevent falls and be aware of fall safety for seniors.

Falls can result in serious injuries to seniors

  • Hip fractures
  • Lacerations and skin tears
  • Fear of falling
  • Social isolation
  • Wrist and arm fractures
  • Bleeding around the brain (subdural hematoma)

Risk Factors for Falls

  • Difficulty with balance
  • Medical illnesses such as ParkinsonŐs disease, strokediabetes, arthritis, chronic pain, seizure disorders
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Medications
  • Dementia
  • Foot issues such as corns, calluses and nerve damage
  • Fear of falling
  • Unsafe home environment

How to Prevent Seniors from Falling

  • Remove scatter rugs
  • Improve lighting
  • Install and use handrails
  • Place a non skid mat in the shower or tub
  • Use a shower chair or bath bench
  • Install grab bars in the shower or tub and by the toilet
  • Encourage the use of a walking aids (cane, walker, etc) if the person is unsteady on their feet
