Front Wheel Walker

A front wheel walker is a mobility aide that helps those that are unsteady on their feet. They are an excellent way to reduce falls. For those familiar with walkers, it provides more support than a 4 wheel walker (4WW) but less than a standard walker.

What do they do?

They provide support for seniors with decreased balance, strength and endurance. They are lightweight, often made out aluminum and can usually be folded up to fit in closet or car trunk.

They are made of aluminum, rubber and plastic.

Who are they designed for?

They are designed for seniors who have decreased balance, strength and endurance. They are an excellent way to reduce falls. They provide more support than a 4WW but less than a standard walker. Some have skids or skis on the back legs so they can slide along the floor (ie. user does not need to pick the walker up off the floor).

What I need to know before purchasing?

Height - Most are adjustable. The handles should be at the same level as the crease of the users wrist when their arms are at their side.

Design - Make sure the design is sturdy and if it folds, make sure it can lock in place.

Weight limit - Make sure the item is intended for the users weight.

How much do they cost?

They range from $50 to $150, depending on the design.

What else do I need to make mobility safer for my aging parent?

4WW - It provides less support but some seniors do not need the extra support. The benefits of a 4WW is that it has a basket, seat, rolls more smoothly, works better outside and over uneven terrain and has brakes.

Cane - Provides minimal support but for some seniors this is all they need.
