Installing a grab bar (or two or three!) will make the lives of your aging parents safer and easier. Do they have difficulty getting off the toilet? In/out of the bathtub? It only takes one fall to cause a serious injury. Don't let it happen to your parents.

They give your aging parent something secure to hold onto while getting out of the shower, on and off the toilet and anywhere else they need extra support. They are designed to be fastened to solid parts of the wall (ie. studs)
They are made of metal and plastic, depending on the design.
They are designed for anyone with decreased strength, endurance and balance. Seniors fit into this category. Installing them is an excellent way to reduce falls.
Length - Determine where you want to install them. The easiest method is by having the user demonstrate the movement (ex. getting up from the toilet) and mark where they naturally place their hands. This is typically the best location. The length then depends on where the studs are in relation to where you want the grab bar to be.
Style - They come in a number of different styles including: multiple colors, materials, knurled or smooth. I recommend a stainless steel with a knurled finish.
Installation - Determine what you have to install it into... is it dry wall to a wooden stud or through tile? This will affect how and what you will install it with. Medical supply stores typically do installations and are experienced at mounting them in a variety of locations and to a variety of surfaces.
They can cost between $10 to $50, depending on the design and materials.
There are a variety of items that make things safer for seniors in the bathroom, including: commodes, shower chair, hand held shower-head and non-slip mat.
