Does your aging parent have difficulty walking? A wheelchair can help. There are a wide variety of styles. Some are self propelled, others are powered and some are just meant to be pushed.

At a very basic level, they allow people to move while remaining seated. People can move them with their arms and/or their feet. They can also be powered by batteries. Others are only meant to be pushed.
They are made of metal, plastic, fabric and rubber. They range from simple to very complex. Some even have computers built into them!
They are designed for anyone with decreased strength, endurance, balance and flexibility which affects their ability to ambulate safely. Some seniors fit into this category.
Using one can greatly reduce the risk of falling.
Uses - How will it be used? How often? Does it need to be self propelled or powered or pushed?
Simple to complex - I recommend having a health care professional provide recommendations specific for your aging parent if it is going to be used frequently. They can assist with choosing styles, cushions and features your parent will benefit from. They can also determine what wheelchair will suit their needs for years to come.
Size - Make sure the salesperson or health care professional measures: seat width, seat depth and seat height at the very least. They should also look at the back rest height, arm rest height and wheel placement (fore/aft) as this affects the driving characteristics.
They range from $300 to over $10,000, depending on how complex a chair is needed.
4 wheel walker - Walkers that provide support for those who are walking but have difficulty with balance, strength and endurance. They have 4 wheels, brakes, a seat and usually a basket (or bag) to carry items in.
Cane - For those who just need a bit of support while walking.
