Elderly Parent Refuses to Eat and Drink

71 yr old female


In and out of hospital over the last 8 weeks numerous times.

Hospital gets the nutrient numbers up where they should be... she goes home.... and then the cycle of poor eating starts again which results in another trip to the hospital.

She has been anorexic for the last 10 years or more.

What to do?

That cycle sounds absolutely exhausting to watch. One thing worth looking into, eating disorder specialists who work with older adults, since most resources tend to focus on younger people. It might also help to have a frank conversation with her doctors about bridging that gap between hospital and home, whether that's an outpatient program or adjusted care plan. You're clearly doing everything you can.
