Mobility for Senior with One Arm

by Rose
(Ontario, Canada)

My mom had polio 40+ yrs ago.

She has use of her left hand but not arm. Her right arm has been fine until recently with some pain.

She still drives. Her issue is walking distances now.

She is a widow.

She's thought about a walker but doesn't know how she could possibly fold it or lift it on her own since she only has use of the one arm.

Any advice?

Senior Mobility NEW

Your mom sounds incredibly resilient. The concern about her right arm is worth taking seriously though, especially since overcompensation is really common when one side has been doing the heavy lifting for decades. It might be worth having her see a physical therapist who has experience with post-polio patients specifically, because they can assess her situation holistically and recommend the best path forward for her particular needs.
